Garden Simplicity

Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show 2004 The Safer Neighbourhoods Garden

The gardens celebrated the history of 175 years of the Metropolitan Police Service, established during the Regency period, in 1829.

The re-creation of the Regency town house garden compares with the contemporary urban garden; demonstrating social and lifestyle changes, and advances in garden security.

The Regency front garden exhibits examples of the materials and specific plant species that would have been available at this time. Front gardens were an important display of the owners wealth and status showing off their collection of plants to passers-by.

In comparison, the contemporary garden demonstrated that today it is our back gardens that are highly valued as an extension to the living area, being used for entertaining, dining and relaxing. The garden design meets todays demanding lifestyle creating an outdoor room for the house. The planting scheme provides year round interest through foliage texture and form. The contemporary garden has been designed to provide a tranquil retreat from city life with security measures incorporated to provide additional peace of mind.
